Patriot Pen

Students in Mrs. Poor's 8th grade literacy classes participated in the annual "Patriot's Pen Essay Contest," sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Students wrote an essay which was between 300-400 words and answered a prompt. The prompt for this year was, "My vow to our veterans..." The top 10 essays from the grade were chosen and sent to the VFW for them to choose their top three winners.

The top three winners read their poems at the annual Veterans Day Program hosted by Waldron Middle School and the WMS Student Council. The winner of the essay contest will now move to the state competition. Mrs. Poor said there were many excellent essays submitted, and that it was very hard to narrow it down to the top 10. “We would like to thank the VFW and the VFW’s Bill Coben for facilitating this contest,” shared the school district.

The top 3 Patriot's Pen Essay Winners were 3rd Place - Stephanie Parish; 2nd Place - Diann Ballance; and 1st Place - Harlow Dickens.
