Both the Waldron Bulldogs and LadyBulldogs basketball seasons are continuing into the 3A-1 Regional Tournament this week at Waldron High School.
Last week, the Lady Bulldogs went into the 3A-1 West District Tournament with a 10-17 record, holding the #6 seed overall. In round number one, Coach Atchley’s team defeated #7 seed Mansfield by twenty-one, 54-33, to advance to the second round. A day later, the Lady Bulldogs upset #3 seed Lincoln with a 54-45 victory, to clinch a regional tournament berth and advance to the district semi-finals. The Lady Bulldogs District Tournament run came up short in the semi’s, after a 54-24 loss to #2 seed Elkins, but their season continues.
The hometown Lady Bulldogs earned the #4 seed from the West and will take on the #1 seed from the East, Valley Springs (30-7), in the first round of the 3A-1 Regional Tournament on Wednesday, February 26, at 7:00pm.
On the men’s side of things, the Waldron senior boys team took a 23-5 record into the District Tournament last week as the #1 seed, earning a bye until the semi-finals and an automatic regional tournament berth. Payton Brown led the Bulldogs with 29 points past the #4 seed Greenland Pirates, 60-52, in the semi finals, to advance the fan favorite Waldron boys to the 3A-1 West District Tournament Championship against #2 seed Elkins.
In the Championship game, the Bulldogs held a 21-20 lead after the first quarter of play. However, in the second quarter, Elkins outscored Waldron 25-4, to take a 45-25 lead into halftime. Unfortunately the Bulldogs were unable to make a comeback in the second half, as Elkins ran away with the game to win by a 79-48 final.
Advancing to the Regional Tournament, Coach Brown and the Bulldogs earned the #2 seed from the West, and will play the #3 seed from the East, Clinton (20-7), in the first round on Thursday, February 27, at 8:30pm.
With a win in the first round of Regionals, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will clinch a 3A State Tournament berth.
