Lewis Coleman Shores, the 19-year-old suspect in a September double homicide, died Thursday night after being found unresponsive in his jail cell earlier that day.

On Nov. 29 at around 2:15 pm, Lewis Shores, 19, of Fort Smith was found unresponsive in his cell at Sebastian County Adult Detention Center. Shores was isolated in a cell by himself and a plastic

bag was found over his head. CPR was administered by detention personnel,” Capt. Philip Pevehouse reported.

He continued, “Fort Smith EMS transported Shores to Baptist Hospital in Fort Smith.”

At the time of the initial release, Shores was still alive, but his condition was grave and very serious. “Shores expired at around 9:30 pm … at Baptist Health in Fort Smith.  His body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for autopsy.  The matter is still under investigation by both ASP and SCSO.  Nothing further to report at this time,” Pevehouse concluded in a latter release.

Shores was in prison for Aggravated Residential Burglary and Theft of Property. As of Nov. 30, all charges were entered as nolle prosequi. Shores was also a former suspect in the double homicide of Jimmy and Norma Grubb in Fort Smith and was being charged in neighboring Logan County. At the time of press, there was no documentation of charges against Shores found within the Administrative Office of the Courts website.
